Freshen That Bathroom © 2005, Pam & Tom Hughes
Does starting your day off begin with a stumble through your bathroom, trying to find the requisite bathing, grooming, and dressing needs? Do you encounter a jumble of dirty towels, multiple bottles of shampoo, hair care products, and shaving supplies? Are all your cosmetics in disarray, with half-used lotions, antiseptics, and medicines in no particular order? And what about the basic bathroom supplies such as toilet paper, extra soaps, and bathroom cleansers? With the new school year starting, now might be a great time to get this space in shape. Here are a few key strategies to start the process and keep it all in shape for the future. As with any organizing project, think in terms of activity areas and group like things together close to where they’ll be used. Hopefully you have some drawers and cabinets around the sink area to contain your daily grooming and personal needs. They’ll be more effective if you can divide them up with inexpensive drawer dividers and baskets. If little ones are around, make sure that you protect them by using child-proof locks. Bathroom cleansers can be contained in baskets under the sink. There are lots of decorative baskets and containers available for makeup. Look around and choose a couple that will work well for your needs. Be sure to purge any old makeup, especially the eyeliners and mascara. Keep your everyday makeup in an easy to access makeup bag so it’s ready for running out the door. Take time to go through the medicine cabinet, throwing away all the outdated medicines. Replenish your first aid kit. Check out this link to FEMA’s Family Disaster Kit which includes items to include in your first aid kit. If you are blessed with a linen closet in your bathroom, then take time now to straighten it. Unload all those ragged or worn towels. Keep an ample supply, but not an overabundance. The same goes for bed linens and blankets. Remember, animal shelters love the old ones for their puppies and kittens! And create a storage area for surplus bathroom supplies if there’s room. Keep in mind that hooks, shelves, over-the-door hangers, shower caddies, and stacking baskets can serve you well in the small confines of a bathroom. Some of you may be sharing space in your bathroom with your children. If that’s the case then make sure everybody has a basket or a spot for their things and set the tone by picking up as you go. As you continue through the bathroom revamp, just remember that the better you do the job now, the easier it will be in the morning when you are trying to get out the door in a hurry.
