Reclaim Your Garage!

Get ready! What a great time to clean out the garage!

Get set! Why not make room for your car in your garage? And why not provide hassle-free storage for your passions and hobbies like sports, gardening, and woodworking at the same time?

Go! Today’s the day you begin to tackle this “room” in your house. It’s time to make it work for you.

Here are some organization ideas to get you started.

In 5 minutes set up zones where you can put items to be designated as: throw away, donate, and recycle. Put a bin or box in each area. Now you are ready to start filling them up as you have time. Be aggressive – out go the broken flowerpots, broken lawn sprinklers, old smelly garbage cans, and the mildew-ridden cushion that fits on a chair you no longer own!

In 15 minutes you can gather up all the hazardous materials, i.e. old paint cans, batteries, and chemicals no longer needed. Put them in a box and label to take to the next hazardous waste pick up. Get your neighbors together and plan to make the trip together.

In 30 minutes you can hang a pegboard or grid and a row of hooks on one of the garage walls. Now gather up your tools and gardening equipment and hang them up where they will be easy to find the next time you need them. Use a brightly colored marking pen to draw around the outside of the tools for easy replacement. You can mark the wall under the hooks with the names of the tools you hang there.

Now you’ve started the race. Just continue sorting, disposing and designating a place for all your “garage” items. Store them by function and be creative in labeling! Finish the race by sticking to it and you’ll win the satisfaction of moving that car back into its spot!

If you think there’s a bogeyman around, turn on the light.”
