Where’s the Floor?

Well, summer’s been in full swing for quite a few weeks now and if you have children you may be wondering if you’ll ever find the floor again. Here are some quick tips to reclaim that space:

· Consider enforcing a 3-toy rule. Only 3 toys out at a time, put one away before getting another one out.

· Altogether too many toys? Create a toy library by putting some up and away. Rotate them in and out.

· Sort, store, simplify. Sort like toys together. Store them in easy-to-access containers. And simplify by paring down.

· Designate homes for specific toys: some toys inside, some outside, some upstairs, some downstairs.

· Make sure the home is known. Label, label, label!

· Keep it easy. Try hooks, shelves, and easy-to-use containers.

· Get down, get low. View things from your child’s perspective. Keep everyday storage within easy reach.

· Mark the time. Establish official pick up times each day.

· Make it a game. Challenge them. Reward them.

Above all, as you go about establishing guidelines, creating homes, and clearing the floor, make sure you set a good example for your children. Show them how to master their everyday chores and organize their space for the larger challenges ahead.
